VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-BUSH
Compact bush bean, averaging 10" in height. White flowers. Green immature pods becoming yellow at maturity. Straight, flat pods have very long beaks. Slight constriction between seeds. Mature pods average 4.5" long by 0.5" wide. Suture string present. Plants are typically heavy bearers, according to donor. However, plants had low productivity in 2012 drought year at Heritage Farm. Shattering dry pods average 3 seeds per pod. Excellent shelling bean, well liked by staff for rich flavor and moist flesh. Large, white kidney-shaped beans with dark brown pigment around the hilum. Dry beans are slightly sweet with a full, rich flavor. Beans retain their pattern after cooking. Mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE by Robert & Jannett Pearson. Originally from Robert's great-grandfather, Frank Amerson, who left west Arkansas in about 1918 for Oklahoma. Frank brought this bean back with him upon his return to Arkansas a few years later.
