Bush habit. Can be used as a snap or dry. Snap bean have an average flavor and sweetness if somewhat dry. Dry beans have a potato like flavor and texture and would work well as a baked bean. Bushy, highly branched plants measure 1.4-1.7' tall. Straight green pods mature to a uniform pale yellow. Fully expanded pods measure 5.0-6.0" long and 0.5" wide. 4-6 seeds per pod. Large seeds are deep maroon and kidney shaped. Flowers are pink and have long wings and a small standard. Above average productivity. Snap beans in mid July. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. Withee received the variety from Elmer Rogers of ME. A variety by this name was available in the U.S. as early as 1884 from the Peter Henderson & Co seed company. SSE Accession # 101051
