VEGETABLES / SORGHUM
Syrup sorghum with very sweet sap. Seed donor Wayne Hayes of Kentucky, who has grown this variety for many decades, says "‘Sugar Drip’ needs about 17 gallons of juice to make a gallon of sorghum, but the syrup made from Sugar Drip has a much better flavor [compared to Williams]." Wayne harvests the cane when the seeds are in the dough stage. He strips off the leaves, cuts the first two joints out of the top (near the seed head) and then cuts the stalks. Cane juice has exceptional flavor. Brix was 18.9 at dough stage in 2017 at Heritage Farm. Plants reach 7-9' tall. 75% of plants do not tiller; 25% have one tiller. Seed heads stay upright when seeds ripen. Seeds are straw-colored with a mahogany glume. SSE Accession # 132990
