Osaka Honnoga

Plants 2-3' tall. Main stem and petioles greenish-violet, leaves green. Variable with some fruit large, dark purple, and elongated, and others smaller, whitish green, and elongated. All are borne singly. Market mature fruit average 5.8" long, 2.2" wide, and 6.6 oz. Fruit become yellow with a persistent purple blush at seed maturity. Few prickles on main stem and pedicel. Very sharp prickles on calyx. Pubescent leaves with slight lobing. Purple flowers born singly or in pairs. Standard productivity. Early maturing. The flavor is mild, though slightly bitter. It has a spongy texture and is slightly watery. Donated to SSE by Guy Bailey (CA BA G) who, in the 1993 SSE Yearbook Exchange, stated this variety was collected in Kauai, Hawaii in 1983.
