This variety is a bush bean best eaten dry. It is a classic kidney bean, and tastes as such. It is dark red in color and slightly earthy in taste. It is not hard seeded. The pods are light green, flat, wide, and measure 6-7" in length. They are slightly curved. The flowers are pink. The variety has average productivity and is early to mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. John Withee acquired this variety from RH Shumway Seed Company. Shumway listed this variety as a good baking bean with rich flavor for the first time with this varietal name in 1936 and at least until 1975. SSE Accession # 101005
