Dark maroon curly leaf type. Intensely pigmented leaves are highly undulating and highly toothed. Strong leaf blistering. Fair eating qualities. Leaves are moderately tender and slightly bitter. Not very sweet. Largest leaves measure 6-8" long by 6-9" wide at market maturity. Plants reach 6-8" tall by 11-14" wide. Uniform plants. Mid-season maturing. Black seeded. Developed by John Scarchuk (CT SC J, 1913-2000), former plant breeder at the University of Connecticut. The variety was designated an All-America Selections Award Winner in 1987.
