VEGETABLES / ONION
COMMON
Purple-red, spindle-shaped bulbs. White flesh. Bulbs most commonly have one or two growing centers. Bulbs measure 3.5-4.5" long; 2-2.5" wide; and weigh 4-8 oz. Bulbs are very flavorful when cooked. Raw, they are very pungent and slightly bitter. Good storage onion. Donated to SSE in 1993 by Owen Nelson of Las Vegas, Nevada. Nelson received the variety when he lived in Cochrane, Wisconsin during the 1980s. It was given to him by a friend of a friend and at that time it was only grown by about "a half a dozen old-timers" in Cochrane. Nelson indicated it is a good winter keeper. SSE Accession # 114308
