Tait's White Dent

Single Image
VEGETABLES / CORN
DENT
White dent corn. Late maturing. Best suited for long growing seasons. Some variability exists in this variety, in terms of ear size, number of kernel rows, and, especially, degree of dentation. A small percentage of plants produce ears with some flint corn genetics. Generally, ears are large, measuring 9-11 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. Kernels are large too. 12-16 kernels rows, rarely 18. White cobs. Ears are cylindrical with good tip fill. Plants are tall, growing 8-10 feet with no tillers. Mostly one ear per plant, occasionally two. In 1912, a variety named as 'Tait's Perfected White Dent' was being sold by George Tait and Sons of Norfolk, Virginia. The description in Tait's 1912 catalog reads, "It will give a splendid yield, and, on account of its earliness, may be planted a full week later than most white corns of equal size. The ears, which are often twelve inches long, average fourteen rows, the grain being of fair length." SSE acquired this modern strain from the J.W. Jung Seed Company of Randolph, Wisconsin in 2017.
