Pink beefsteak. Indeterminate growth, regular leaves. Good flavor. Slightly sweet, low acid. Very juicy with a soft, meaty texture. Thin skin. Strongly depressed, ribbed stem end with a wide pedicel scar. Slight radial and concentric cracking on a minority of fruit. 1-3 fruit per cluster. Ripe fruit measure 2.3-3.7" long by 2.5-4.5" wide and weigh 0.4-1.1lbs. Highly exserted, fasciated styles. Plants suffered from septoria leaf spot in 2014 growout at Heritage Farm. Mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE by Ron Thuma (KS TH R) who received the variety in 1992 from George & Bessie Jennings of Waverly, KS. It was grown only as on ornamental plant by "Grandpa Barnes" during the Civil War era because he believed them to be poisonous; later grown by his daughter, Anise (Barnes) Jennings.
