VEGETABLES / SPINACH
Semi-savoy spinach with dark green leaves and moderate blistering. Glossy leaves are semi-prostrate and range in shape from elliptic to orbicular. Smooth-seeded. Fall grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm and did not bolt. Leaves are somewhat tough and thick, but have a great hearty flavor. A brief description of Viking appears in the 1938 document Descriptions of Types of Principal American Varieties of Spinach and seems to be a good fit. Acquired by SSE in the 1980s from Unwins (CV Unw) of Farmingdale, NJ. This variety was a 1935 release by Sluis and Groot of Enkuizen, Holland. It was also a 1935 All-America Selections winner.
