WINTER
Daikon type. White roots are very long and slightly tapered. Smooth skin. Roots extend 6-8 inches above the soil and are quite curved, making them somewhat difficult to harvest without breaking. Roots reached up to a foot and a half long when fall grown at Heritage Farm, and were vigorous and uniform. A few roots were branched. Leaves are yellow-green, long, highly lobed, and horizontally oriented, so give these plants plenty of space. Plants reach up to 2 feet in diameter. Excellent, sweet flavor and crisp, juicy texture. Moderately pungent. Best sown in late summer for fall harvest. Acquired by SSE from Thompson & Morgan who offered it from 1982-1997. According to SSE’s GSI publications, it has been consistently available in the US from at least 1981-2014, and is known by several synonyms, including “Madras.” Most commercial sources for the variety suggest that it is traditionally served with Bavarian beer and dark bread in Munich.
