Sprawling. Immature pods green with purple tips. Pods turn red as they mature, then fade to tan when dry. Pods 7-11" long with up to 20 seeds per pod (14 is average). Seeds are large and brownish-red, with slight to moderate crowding. Dry cowpeas have a good, meaty flavor. Slightly sweet. Thick skin hold up well to cooking. Violet flowers. Midseason maturing. Donated to SSE by Col. W.G. Ghormley. It was given to Ghormley by a neighbor. The variety is originally from San Angelo, TX where the unnamed neighbor's family grew this cowpea for two generations.
