Wax Melon, Bullet Head

Benincasa hispida; long-fruited variety can get quite large. Common in China and SE Asia; becoming more common in US. Grows well there; not bothered much by squash bugs; fruits kept for months into winter. Cucumber-like but denser; the flesh can be candied, pickled, etc. Called "Winter Melon" by Asian-Americans; not to be confused with the winter melon cucumis melo inodorus. Wax melons will not cross with any other melons or cucumbers. Source: CV Ba8
