VEGETABLES / CORN
SWEET
Mid-season maturing, white sweet corn. Ears turn dark blue at maturity. This was the staff favorite sweet corn among 12 varieties in 2018 for flavor. Best flavor when ears just begin to turn slightly blue. At this point, they're a little less juicy, but very creamy and sweet with the fullest flavor. Kernels are still tender at this time too. Plant reach 4-6 feet tall. 2-5 tillers per plant, with some secondary branching off the tillers. Ears are small and cylindrical in shape, measuring 4-6 inches long, 1.3 inches wide. White cobs. 8-12 kernel rows. Donated to SSE by Marvin Gonitzke who received it from Eugene Hjerleid (pronounced with a silent H, “ZHAIR-lide”). It was grown since at least the early 1940s in Blair, WI by Eugene's grandfather Ludwig Hjerleid (1865-1955). SSE Accession # 108028
