VEGETABLES / BEAN
WAX-POLE
Climbing wax bean. Outstanding flavor. Juicy, crisp, and fruity. Pods are pale yellow, 7-9" long, and flat. Seed are solid white and kidney-shaped. Strongly vining plants with white flowers. Average productivity and late maturing. This variety was donated to SSE in by George & Jerreth McLaughlin (OK MC G) who began stewarding it in 1984. It was given to them by Jerreth's grandparents, Albert and Cora Swalley of Salem, Illinois. Albert and Cora got the seeds in 1983 from a neighbor named Claude Barksdale. Cora remembered Claude growing large patches of this bean when the Swalley's still lived on their old family homestead before they moved to town in 1964. Claude got the seeds of the variety from his aunt, Lavera Halsclaw when she was 101 years old. According to the McLaughlins, Lavera grew the variety for at least 40 or 50 years. (SSE staff estimates this to be since circa 1920.) SSE Accession # 132987
