VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-POLE
Pole/Dry. 100 days to first dry pods. A.K.A. Monstrance, Monstranz, Angel. Fairly Vigorous climber. Productive plants. First dry pods in about 115 days. Pods wrinkle and tighten a bit around their seeds as they dry. Seed is plump oval tending to be fairly rounded. Color is white with a red maroon bug or bird like figure, or some say even an angel around the eye. They have been in New Zealand a long time but came originally from France and a story associated with the beans is that according to legend, a French pastor hid his church treasures underground during the first World War, fearing theft. In order to protect the treasures even better he planted beans on top of them. When the beans were ripe for picking and being shelled the pastor discovered pictures of a monstrance, or a holy figure on the beans. The beans had eventual come to be also used in making Rosaries. My original seed was sent to me by Mark Christensen of the Central Tree Crops Research Trust Of New Zealand '11.
