VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-BUSH
Bush bean, used as a dry or shelling bean. Long, kidney-shaped, buff-colored seeds with cranberry type markings. Plump dry beans have excellent, rich flavor. Pods are green and develop vivid red stripes as they mature. Pods reach 5-6" long and 0.5-0.6" wide. 2-5 seeds per pod. Pink flowers. Early maturing. Medium-high productivity for a bush bean. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. It is unclear from whom John Withee acquired his seed sample. A variety by this name was originally developed in 1946 by Prof. J. R. Hepler and Elwyn Meader at the University of New Hampshire. It was offered by the Billy Hepler Seed Company, started by Prof. Hepler’s son, 1947-1962. SSE Accession # 101132
