VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-BUSH
Bush. Dry or shelling (horticultural) bean. Long, kidney-shaped, buff-colored seeds with cranberry type markings. Plump dry beans have excellent, rich flavor. Pods are green and develop vivid red stripes as they mature. Pods reach 5-6" long and 0.5-0.6" wide. 2-5 seeds per pod. Pink flowers. Early maturing. Medium-high productivity for a bush bean. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. It is unclear how John Withee acquired his seed sample, but 'Flash' was originally developed by professors J. R. Hepler and Elwyn Meader at the University of New Hampshire. Introduced in 1946, 'Flash' was offered from 1947-1962 by the Billy Hepler Seed Company, a company started by Professor Hepler’s son, William R. Hepler. SSE Accession # 101132
