C.-MAXIMA
C. maxima. A small, slate blue hubbard squash with a slightly corky rind and hard shell. They are fairly uniform in size. Fruit are 4-5" in length, 5-6" in width, and 2-2.5lbs. Flesh is dark orange, pretty dry, and 0.5-1" thick. During the 2021 season at Heritage Farm, this variety had medium-low productivity, averaging 4-5 fruit per plant. It grows in a semi-bush habit. Early maturing. acquired by SSE at an unknown date from former SSE curator Glenn Drowns, who got it from Johnny’s Selected Seeds around 1981. This variety was developed in 1950 at the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station. It resulted from a cross between Bush Buttercup and Blue Hubbard. SSE Accession # 119778
