Short, stubby, triangular to round carrot. Light orange skin with a yellow core. Wide shoulders with a flat or concave crown. No forking, moderate splitting in 2016 growout at Heritage Farm. Roots 2-3" long, 2" wide at market maturity. Medium leaf vigor; green-yellow leaves. Early maturing. Excellent for heavy soils and bred for early forcing. Performs best in cool weather. Fair flavor, less sweet, less juicy, moderately crisp in 2016 spring planting. This accession matches the description of Golden Ball listed in the Burpee catalogue from 1888. Donated to SSE by Robert Wood (KS WO R). 'Golden Ball' has been available since before 1890 in the U.S. The 1888 W. Atlee Burpee seed catalog noted that 'Golden Ball' was developed for forcing and is also known as 'Early Very Short Scarlet' and 'Earliest Short Horn.' SSE Accession # 106861
