Dark red-purple, round to slightly flattened beet. Deep red flesh, faint concentric rings. Mostly smooth skin. 3-4" long, 3-4" wide at market maturity. Fair flavor; some off flavors; a little bitter when grown in 2016. Green to green-purple leaves, purple veins. Petioles look like candy canes with their purple and white streaks. This accession matches the description of 'Perfected Detroit' listed in the USDA Bulletin 374 from 1940. Acquired by SSE from the De Giorgi Seed Company (CV Deg). A variety named 'Perfected Detroit was a 1934 All-America Selections winner. SSE Accession # 106262
