Thompson's Pole

Single Image
VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-POLE
Snap bean. Strongly climbing pole bean. Long, green beans are tender with good flavor. Slightly sweet and moderately juicy. Suture string present. Most pods are recurving, or slightly S-shaped and are well-rounded. Green pods mature to yellow with some purple stripes. Pods measure 7-8.5" long. White flowers. Non-pigmented plants. 7-10 seeds per pod. Medium-large, white, kidney-shaped seeds. Moderately productive when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE by Hugh & Barbara Havercamp. They received the variety from Barbara's father, Ralph Mead Thompson, of Woburn, Massachusetts. It reportedly originated as a cross Ralph's father, William Levi Thompson, made with 'Blue Lake' pole bean. Used by the Havercamps as a canning green bean, shelling, and dry bean.
