Sweet sorghum. Plants 6.5'-8' tall, nodal tillers common, 0-2 basal tillers. Stalks juicy and sweet sparsely waxy. Leaves and midribs dull green. Large seeds, plump, borne singly, straw color, white endosperm, mostly starchy. Black glumes at maturity covering up to 75% of the seed. Exserted inflorescence, semi-compact elliptic, 1-2 flowering stems per plant, and 7-9" tall and 2.75-4.75" wide. No lodging and late maturity when grown in 2014 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE by Dave and Donna Phillips (IN PH D) who obtained it from Paul Griepentrog (WI GR P) in 1985. Originally developed by the Agricultural Experiment Station in Ames, IA from another variety named 'Early Amber'. 'Ames Amber' was trialed throughout Iowa in 1919. SSE Accession # 119310
