Anne Petrou Garlic Chives

Carol Michener of Kettenpom, California donated this variety to SSE in 2014. Carol received the variety from a friend whose grandmother, Anne Petrou, had first started growing this variety in 1943 in her Oxnard, CA garden. Anne herself received the chives from a dear friend. This woman’s grandson was in military service in North Africa at some point before 1943. During his service, “he noticed the local people using this garlic chive in cooking, and smuggled the plant home to give to his grandmother.” SSE Accession # 132343
