HEAD
Butterhead. Light green leaves are tinged with reddish-brown coloring. Leaves are moderately blistered, obovate in shape, measure 6-7" long and 7.5-8.3" wide. Smaller plants form a moderate, circular, solid head and measure 5.5-6.7" tall and 11.8-12.0" in diameter. White seeded. Early bolting when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. One of the more tender, juicier varieties grown in 2015. Matches descriptions of the historic American variety of the same name. From longtime listed member WA SC M, Mary Schultz (deceased), who stewarded a large lettuce collection. According to SSE records, this lettuce is "one of Mary's favorites". Mary described this lettuce in her listing as "I think one of the most beautiful butterheads, very wide creamy green leaves with copper edges where the sun hits." According to WW Weaver, "This is a distinct American variety also called Hardhead and Weber’s Brown Head. The seed is white. Its exact origin is not presently known, but David Landreth & Sons listed it in the firm’s 1875 German-language seed catalog. It is considered a German-American variety". SSE Accession # 111720
