HEAD
Butterhead. Match to historic John A Salzer Seed Co's 1901 catalog description: "This remarkable lettuce does not head but makes a loose bunch of leaves of superlatively fine quality…It forms a beautiful plant; the leaves grow upright, the upper part of the outer leaves turning outwardly very gracefully, and are handsomely wrinkled. The edges of the outer leaves are of a glossy, reddish bronze, very ornamental and fresh in appearance; within, the leaves are almost white and wonderfully crisp and tender. It grows very quickly, is ready to cut early and remains for weeks. It is the cream of all sorts." At Heritage Farm in 2017 plants measured 7.5-9.3" tall and 7.9-13.8" in diameter.
