Medium-sized, oblong, very uniform fruit. Dark green rind with light green stripes from stem to blossom end. Fruit measure 7-12" long and 5-7" in diameter and weigh 4-12lbs. Red flesh. Good texture, standard flavor. Juicy and moderately sweet. Numerous red seeds. Productive plants. Mid-season maturing. a.k.a. Rot Kerne. Donated to SSE by Daniel Flyger(SD FL D). Brought to this country circa 1875 by Hutterites from the Crimea in Russia. Flyger received seed in 1989 from an elderly Mennonite couple named John and Sarah Gross in Hutchison County, SD who were of Hutterisch descent and who had raised the variety all their life.
