Chinquapin, Ozark

Single Image
FRUITS-BERRIES-NUTS / MISC-NUTS
{i Castanea ozarkana} Once widespread in Arkansas and lower Missouri, but logging (1880-1930) and blight (1940s-present) have made it an endangered species. This strain is evidently resistant. Nut is similar to a chestnut, but only one nut per burr. Not to be confused with the chinkapin oak, which is unrelated and bears no edible nuts. From nuts collected by Ms. Skip Easter, Cassville Missouri. Only available Oct-Dec, the nuts do not store well so should be planted immediately.
