VEGETABLES / CORN
POPCORN
Popcorn. Kernels off-white. A mix of corn husk sizes at full maturity. Plants 4-8' tall. Silks were either white or purple. Grown by Linda Andersen and her daughter Jen in 2022 and 2023 for the Collection Documentation Project; they described their 2023 season, "We had some issues with slugs eating the leaves of the plants when they were small and later on the Japanese beetles were eating the silks of the corn. Some of our corn was not pollinated well and resulted in undeveloped corn kernels, which we think happened because there were not enough rows of corn planted together in that area. Also, some of the plants that only grew to be about 4-5 feet tall had smaller corn cobs and underdeveloped kernels. The larger plants had more fully developed cobs. Some cobs had very organized and uniform kernels while others were more disorganized. The popcorn tasted delicious and has a buttery taste when it popped well, however we had issues with enough of it popping. We let them cobs of corn dry for 4 weeks but it may not have been long enough. It pops up smaller than typical yellow popcorn or the red or purple popcorn that we have bought from the store. / Overall, we really like this popcorn, but may need to find a better way to grow it so it pollinates better and more of the kernels pop once it is dried.)"
