Southern Field Pea

Single Image
VEGETABLES / COWPEA
Large, buff-colored seeds. Delicious, earthy, sweet flavor with a smooth texture. Pods are a light yellow-green color and develop a pink blush at maturity. Pods reach 5.5-6.5" long and contain 10-18 seeds. Each peduncle bears 1-2 pods. Pods are produced mostly above the plant leaf canopy. Plants are moderately sprawling and were highly productive when grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Early maturing. Donated to SSE in 2001 by Walter Bumgarner (NE BU W) who obtained this variety circa 1975 from an Earl May store. Bumgarner grew it for over 25 years and noted that it was the best cowpea he had ever grown. SSE Accession # 108995
