HEAD
A beautiful, heavily speckled butterhead. Red-purple speckles are dense and found on all leaves over a greenish-yellow base color. Inner leaves form a tight rosette, or loose head. Good flavor, slightly astringent, not bitter. Plants reached 5-6" tall; 11-13" wide in 2016 planting at Heritage Farm. Moderately bolt resistant. Black seeded. Donated to SSE in 2004 by Virginia Van Wyngarden of Des Moines, IA. She believes that her grandmother's parents brought the variety to the U.S. from Germany. SSE Accession # 112522
