SNAP-POLE
Pole, snap bean. Also used as a dry bean. Plants have a slight to moderate climbing habit depending upon environmental conditions. Snap beans have a nice flavor and crunchy, juicy, firm texture. Pods 6-7" long; 0.7" wide; green; recurving; highly constricted between seeds. Moderate suture string. Pods turn yellow and develop light red stripes at maturity. 7-9 seeds per pod. Seeds tan to brown; long; oval. White flowers. Dry beans are plump with standard flavor. Medium-low productivity when grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. Withee received this variety from SSE member Lois Archer (AR AR L) of Benton, AR. Lois Archer indicated that she received it from a granddaughter of a Mr. Abernathy and that Mr. Abernathy brought the variety from Georgia in about 1852. SSE Accession # 101255
