Lillibridge (Kettle Family)

Single Image
VEGETABLES / RUNNER-BEAN
This variety reached the top of a 12 foot tall teepee at Heritage Farm. Scarlet flowers. Immature pods are green and have good flavor as a green bean. Some develop purple stripes as they mature. 4-5 seeds per pod. Seeds are purple with black mottling. Plants are moderately productive. There is a recessive gene for non-pigmented plants, including white flowers, white seeds, and green stems, in this variety which should not be there. If saving seeds, do not save white seeds and if possible, rogue off-type seedlings with non-pigmented stems before plants have a chance to flower and cross pollinate with other plants. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. SSE Accession # 118960
