Gray Speckled Palapye

Single Image
VEGETABLES / COWPEA
Bush habit with some runners. Cooked seeds have a mild, earthy flavor. Solid violet flowers. Light green immature pods have a faintly pigmented tip. Tan dry pods measure 7.0-9.4" long. 15-16 seeds per pod. Racemes positioned throughout canopy. Sub-hastate green leaves. Seeds small, tan with grey-blue speckles, and squared ends. Above average productivity when grown on Heritage Farm in 2018. Donated to SSE by William Woys Weaver (PA WE W) who received the variety from Anne Bertinuson (BOTS BE A) in 1996. Bertinuson originally purchased the seeds in a market in Palapye, Botswana, Africa. Weaver stated the dry cowpea tastes terrific but the green pods can also be used like a string bean.
