Early White Bush Scallop

Single Image
VEGETABLES / SQUASH
C.-PEPO
Scallop type summer squash. Plants have a bush-like habit but vine considerably more than modern bush-type summer squash and are quite leafy. Fruit are pale green when young and mature to solid white. Harvest when small and pale green and skin is easily pierced by your fingernail. Flavor is slightly sweet but a little bland. Plants produce fruit continuously throughout the season but productivity is only fair. Not particularly early maturing for a summer squash. This accession matches the description of Early White Bush Scallop listed in The Field and Garden Vegetables of America from 1874. Acquired by SSE from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. According to most historians, the scalloped form of C. pepo was grown in North America prior to Columbus’ arrival in 1492. It was first described and illustrated in Rembert Dodoens’ herbal “Curydeboeck," published in Holland in 1554. SSE Accession # 120355
