A beautiful, large, red-green romaine. Forms a loose green heart with a red-brown blush on the tips of outer leaves. Leaves are red-brown, smooth and glossy. Crisp, juicy, good flavor. Plants reach 10-12" tall and 17-21" wide. Average bolting resistance. Black seed. Reputed to be cold hardy. Donated to SSE by Erin Micki Taylor (CA TA E). A variety by this name is described by American horticulturist Fearing Burr, Jr. in his 1863 publication “Field and Garden Vegetables of North America.” SSE Accession # 112274
