VEGETABLES / CORN
UNSORTED-CORN
About half of ears are podded and half are not. Ears of both types have 12-18 kernel straight rows with 16 being most common. Ears 4-7" long and 1.7-2.3" wide. Cobs white. All manner of kernel colors and types found on podded and non-podded ears including white, yellow, blue, purple, red, variegated, sweet, dent, flint, and flour. Individual ears sometimes display this full range of variation. Some ears have pointed kernels. Variegated ears are quite common, accounting for perhaps 50% of non-podded ears and even more of the podded ears The intensity of the variegation ranges from light to very dark. Podded ears split in half easily, as their rachis are thin and weak. Kernels on the podded ears take on the shape of the glumes, being longer and tapering to a point. The glumes on the podded ears show a range in length from ear to ear. Leaves pendant with moderate surface area. Stems purple. Plants 6-8.5' tall with 1-3 tillers common. Little ear damage although corn smut common and minor lodging when grown in 2014 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE by an individual named Nesselroad from Adel, IA. SSE Accession # 107856
