VEGETABLES / COWPEA
Indeterminate, late maturing cowpea with a strong vinig habit. Pods are light green, long and thick with 12-15 seeds per pod. Seeds are variable in color and size. Plants have large leaves and bear light purple flowers. James McEntyre of Whitwell, Tennessee stewarded this variety for about 50 years. He first received the seeds sometime in the mid 1950s or mid 1960s from a friend named Sewell Childers. James was actively growing cowpea in 2011 at age 97. His daughter, Elaine, helped facilitate the seed donation to SSE in 2012 and said her dad likes to blanch and freeze the peas, then cooks them by boiling them for about thirty minutes.
