Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. Withee received the variety circa 1972 from the Colorado National Seed Storage Laboratory now known as the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation (NCGRP). A variety by this name was originally developed at the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station by plant breeders Albert Yeager and Elwyn Meader in 1957, and offered by the Billy Hepler Seed Company from 1957-1962.
