Swedish Purple Pod

Single Image
VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-POLE
Robust pole habit. Best used as a snap bean for canning. Snap beans are quite sweet and juicy, becoming stringy when larger. Cooked beans are pasty in texture with a mild flavor. Long, wide, deep purple, highly constricted pods, measuring 6-7.5" long and up to an inch wide. Large, kidney shaped seeds with matte tan coloring and distinct veining. Seven seeds per pod. Hard seeded. Moderately productive and early to mid maturing when grown at SSE Heritage Farm in 2017. Strongly climbing plants with extensive purple stem pigmentation. Purple flowers. This variety was given to SSE in 1981 by Edith Berry (WA BE E) of Port Orchard, WA. Today, the history of this variety is largely unknown. Edith Berry indicated in her 1981 donation letter that the bean pods turn green when blanched for canning and that it is used as a snap bean. SSE Accession # 101835
