Bush lima. Medium-small sized seeds are a pale green to white in color when mature. Dry beans have a green, edamame, grassy flavor that may not be to everyone's liking. Pods are 2.6-3.2 inches long and contain between 2 and 4 seeds, but usually 3. Plants reach up to 18" tall. Below average productivity. Early maturing. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. John Withee acquired this variety from Harris Seed Company in Rochester, New York. Developed by the USDA at Beltsville, Maryland and released in 1958, 'Thaxter' was bred for resistance to downy mildew and promoted as a dependable, high-yielding lima bean for canning and freezing.
