Olteanu's Romanian Yellow

Pole bean with a strong climbing habit. Wax bean with light green young pods that turn yellow early. Long, broad pods are slightly curved. Weak suture string. Attractive mature pods have a purple blush near the stem end and dark purple stripes throughout. Green stems and leaves. White flowers. Mature pods measure 4-6" long by 0.6-0.8" wide. Leathery podded dry pods. 6-7 seeds per pod. Small, oval seeds are mostly purple with a patch of white along the keel. Dry beans have a sweet, earthy flavor with a smooth, dense texture. Thin skin. Mid-season maturing. Highly productive when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE by Mary Ann Olteanu of Vermont, whose father brought the variety to the U.S. from Romania. Mary Ann began stewarding the bean when her father passed away in the late 1980s. Previously distributed by SSE as RUNNER 218 'Olteanu's Romanian Yellow'. SSE Accession # 119152
