This is a spindle shaped onion with reddish brown skin. The flesh is mostly white with some violet. The diameter is between 1.5-2", the height is 2.5-3.5", and the weight is 1.5-3.5oz. Many of these onions have multiple growing centers. It tastes very pungent. It is an intermediate day onion. Isaac and Mary Yoder of Milroy, Pennsylvania donated their family heirloom onion to SSE in 2017. Then in their 70s, Mary said that ever since they started housekeeping, "the bottle onion has more or less been handed around to those in our immediate community.” Mary recalled that her family got these onions from a relative once she was big enough to garden, as her “father was no friend of onions.” The Yoder's donated seeds grown by Mary's sister, Elizabeth Speicher, and which was passed down from Mary and Elizabeth's mother. Stewardship note: if whitish onions are seen, rogue them from the population to maintain the reddish-brown color. SSE Accession # 133412
