VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-POLE
Pole. Dry or shelling bean. Staff favorite for taste as a shelling and dry bean! Plants have a strong twining tendency. Flower standard has light pink along outer edge but is otherwise white. Green immature pods become yellow with maturity and develop light red stripes. Slightly curved, flat pods have long beaks. Moderate constriction between seeds. Mature pods average 5" long by 0.5" wide. Weak suture string becomes strong as pod expands. Good as a snap bean, shelling (horticultural) bean and dry bean. A staff favorite as a shelling bean, with a sweet potato-like flavor. Easy to shell. Dry beans were also a staff favorite with a sweet, rich flavor. Standard productivity. Shattering dry pods typically contain 5-7 seeds per pod. Dark red kidney bean. Late maturing when grown at Heritage Farm in 2013. Donated to SSE by Luke Kapayou who received the seeds from his mother, Agnes Kapayou. Grown by several generations of Luke's family within the Meskwaki nation of Tama County, Iowa. Used by the Meskwaki in corn soup to thicken and add flavor.
