VEGETABLES / RUTABAGA
Roots cream-colored with purple shoulders; half buried, round in shape. Roots average 4.5" long; 3.5" wide; 1lb. Starchy and potato-like in texture with good rutabaga flavor. Leaves have purple petioles; semi-prostrate growth habit. Acquired by SSE from Thompson & Morgan. CV Tho offered it from 1981-1991. This appears to be a synonym of Sutton’s Champion, which was an English variety developed by Suttons Seeds during the middle of the 19th century. Fearing Burr mentioned Sutton’s Champion in his 1865 edition of “Field and Garden Vegetables of North America,” and the D.M. Ferry company sold it for several decades after first listing it in 1891.
