VEGETABLES / SPINACH
Dark green, savoyed leaves. Heart-shaped leaves with long petioles. Leaves are strongly downward cupping. Semi-upright growth habit. Resists bolting when spring sown but may become larger when fall planted. Plants reach up to 10" tall and 2' wide. Round seed. Excellent eating qualities. This accession matches the description of Norfolk listed in Burpee's catalogue from 1882. Acquired by SSE in the 1980s from the Abundant Life Seed Foundation, who obtained their seed stock in the 1970s from grower and SSE member Peter Ruppell (QUE RU P). Originally purchased by Ruppell commercially sometime prior to 1968 when he resided in New Jersey. It is believed to be the same variety described in the 1887 edition of ""Gardening for Profit"" by seedsman Peter Henderson, who sold it as early as 1878. SSE Accession # 119554
