Garden pea. Shelling peas are very sweet. Pods are can be eaten when young and flat. Small plants less than 12" tall and little branching. Straight green pods have 2-6 seeds. One pod per peduncle. Pods measure 1.75-2.75" long, 0.5-0.65" wide, and 0.4-0.5" thick. White flowers. Non-pigmented plants. Smooth, round seeds are cream colored to very light green. Low productivity and mid-season maturity when grown in 2014 at Heritage Farm. This variety was donated to SSE in 2012 by Joyce Bentley of Onawa, Iowa. It's named after Joyce's grandmother, Bettie (Harms) Thrift, but has been grown by several generations of the family. Bettie's mother, Josephine (Hood) Harms of Leedey, Oklahoma, originally received seeds of this variety in 1909 from her sister, Annie Hood, who was visiting from Woodbine, Illinois.
