Harry Strom Black Oats

Single Image
GRAINS / OAT
Dark seed. Plants to 2' tall. Susceptible to rust. This variety was brought to the U.S. from Norway by the Strom family in the early 1900s. Harry Strom raised the oats near Meadowlands, Minnesota until his death in 1996. He used the oats in feed for the birds (chickens, quail) that he also raised. Harry thought that his birds preferred the black oats over other types of oats because they would pick the seed out of mixtures with other colors of oats. Seeds were donated to SSE circa 2002 by Ray Frostad of Kimball, MN, a friend of the Strom family. SSE Accession # 113965
