FRUITS-BERRIES-NUTS / CHESTNUT
Castanea sativa. AKA Chinese chestnut, Spanish chestnut. Native to Southern Europe and Asia Minor. This species is naturalized in north America, filling part of the void left by the native American chestnut (Castanea dentata) which is functionally extinct due to the imported fungal disease chestnut blight. This species is resistant, vigorous, and produces a heavy crop of large chestnuts each fall. They are beloved by squirrels so be sure to gather daily during harvest season. Grows to 30m (100ft) by 15m (50ft) at a medium rate. USDA zone 5-9, produces reliably for me in 9a. Flowers in July, seeds ripen in October. Plant 2 or more trees for best production. Grows in sandy, loamy & clay soils, nutritionally poor soils, and neutral to very acid soil. Drought resistant. can tolerate maritime exposure. 1-3 year old, 12-18” tall (above the soil line) bare root trees shipped while dormant Nov - early March. Plant or heel in on arrival.
