VEGETABLES / RUTABAGA
Unique variety as roots are more spangled than other varieties. Bulbs are woody, dry, offer little flavor, but are slightly sweet when cooked. Triangular to elliptical shaped roots are white with light red and green around the top. Skin is not as smooth as other varieties. Mostly buried roots are 3.5-6" long, 2.25-3.5" in diameter, and weigh 6.5-17.5 oz. Plants are small and have a prostrate growth habit. Leaves have a purple midvein. Plants 3.5-7.5" tall and 13.5-32.5" in diameter. Brassica napus. Donated to SSE by Lewis Wilder (NY WI L). This variety was grown by his great-grandfather and passed down within the family since at least the 1880s; Vermont origin. This accession was previously distributed by SSE incorrectly as a turnip, but botanically, it is a rutabaga. SSE Accession # 127624
