Pink inflorescences form erect spikes, in clusters of 13-18 at top of plant. Side branches all along the stem are shorter than the main stem and have clusters of small inflorescences at their apex. Green stems are red at the base. Plants measure 4-5' tall. Green oval shaped leaves. A very uniform variety. Used as a grain. Tan seed color. The variety 'Plainsman' was released circa 1991 after being developed cooperatively by the Rodale Research Center and the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station.
